Cross Reference Chart:
Furnas (96M) and Reliance Electric (Shark XLII) cross reference to the original Hitachi PLCs part numbers. Posted 4/2/2002
Please be patient if it takes a moment to load, there is a lot of information here...

In 1987 HITACHI began producing the EM-Series PLC. This "Card and Rack" - or "Modular System" was an instant success in the industrial marketplace. By 1990, the EM had evolved into the EMII. Now, with expanded I/O options and a "supped-up" processor, industry professionals around the globe were taking notice.
During this time, Reliance Electric and Furnas Electric made the decision to brand label the EMII and sell them as their own. For Reliance, the EMII became the "Shark XLII". Reliance had been re-labeling the by now famous "E-Series" calling it the "Shark X". So the Shark XLII became the big brother to the Shark X.
Furnas Electric chose to re-labeled a product similar in appearance with the "E", but housing the same high-powered processor as Hitachi's Large H-Series. The Hitachi "H-Board" became the Furnas 96MFM. Furnas did not re-label the E-Series. Later, they did re-label the EMII which became their "96M-Series" PLC.
Both Reliance and Furnas did good jobs marketing the EMII/96M/Shark XLII PLC. You may be among the many satisfied customers who chose this product for your plant, or were happy to find it controlling a new piece of machinery. This product has found itself in virtually every corner of the globe!!!
As you are probably aware, Reliance was bought out by Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley), and Furnas was bought out by Siemens/TI. Naturally, these giants opted to market their own highly successful PLCs through the existing distributor chains rather than brand and market the Hitachi products.
BUT, this is not the end of the story for the EMII. In 1995, with the merging of two Hitachi manufacturing facilities, the powerful "H-Series" processor (mentioned earlier) found its way into the EMII platform. This "merger" was to bring this already healthy product to a new plateau. This new powerhouse is known as the H200/250/252. Now with 5 CPU's to choose from, and with even more I/O than before, the EMII will be in service for some time to come!
UPDATE: 3/1/2007 - Hitachi has announced a STOP IN PRODUCTION for the EMII series. Please click here for details.

NOTE for 96MPR03 (H200) Users: The H200(Furnas 96MPR03) utilizes the same base, power supply and digital I/O as the EMII Series. However some of the "specialty" I/O such as High Speed Counters and Analog I/O are made in two versions - one for the H200 and one for the EMII Series. An example is the High Speed Counter Module: CTH is for use with H200, CTM for use with the EMII. Furnas (for some unknown reason) did not include the I/O for the H200 in their catalog. Reliance was going to introduce the H200 as the Shark XLIII, but was acquired (by Rockwell Automation) before this materialized. |
